Atmosphere is an experiment in user interface design. The focus of the project was to explore new ways of presenting data and integrating that within a digital product. In doing so, I developed a data visualization tactic using basic geometric shapes and colours, and applied it to a mobile app that measures the local air quality index.

The visual system is built around the use of shapes representing numerical values. The number of sides on the shape visually depict the air quality index.

Colour Balance

In addition to shapes, I included to use of colour to further enhance the visual concept, making the information more immediately accessible.

Humidex

The size of the shape represents the humidex, rising on a scale of 0 - 100%.

Timeline

The x-axis moves the shape along a timeline of 12 hour integers, where the y-axis represents the rise in temperature throughout the day.

Product Integration

Once the visual system had been developed, the concept was applied to a mobile application that monitors and compares the air quality across a daily timeline. I used all of the variables in order to design a very minimal, unique experience.
